Camping

26 October 2006

This weekend I managed to get out of the city and go camping with a group of Scouts, it was AMAZING! Great to get back into sleeping in a tent, cooking on a gas burner and dragging myself through the mud of obstacle courses! Had a great time hanging out with kids again so think I am going to start helping out with Scout meetings before dancing on a Thursday, good thing I have Fridays off!

So for Friday and Saturday night we headed out to a place called Chalfont (Zone C on the train - almost as far out of London as you can get) with 13 kids (6 girls and 7 guys) and had a great time taking care of them and in general just being a big kid myself. We sung "Hokey Pokey" around the campfire, and ran around in the forest. Its great to get back to camp (even if I did have to wear my polyprops all weekend) seeing as I haven't been since the middle of 2004 in Japan. Made me realise that I would really like to do Camp America at some stage and hopefully get into Camp Wenonah in Canada as well - before I get too old to be running about in the wilderness with the kids.

Well, in more grown-up professional news, I finished my work at Man Investments today, managed to get everything done they needed me to do and got a bottle of wine and a card even though I was only a temp and only there for a month. Got along with a few of the girls there quite well so will keep in touch and am definately going to miss the free breakies and lunches there, has been great hardly having to buy any food at all for the past month!

Everything in London has been going really well, glandular fever seems to have made a bit of a resurge this weekend but went to the doc and they said there's nothing I can do other than resting and take a mix of meds so will be fine soon. Am still going to Ceroc and enjoying it, was looking into poledancing classes (as its something random Ive always wanted to try) but at £20 a lesson its a little expensive at the moment. Am working this weekend at the Opportunities Australia Expo so that should be great to get some cash on the side (as well as some candy) and get some options lined up for when I get back home. Am probably heading out to a couple of Halloween parties this weekend too - think a couple of us from the flat are all going to dress up as doctors and go out together, should be fun, will get some awesome pictures!

Hope things wherever you are are going well, hope you're enjoying keeping up with my adventures. Love ya and miss ya - Me xx

Living it up in London

17 October 2006

Hey guys, sorry I haven't updated this in ages but things have been a bit manic lately. London has been pretty exciitng the past month and Ive managed to cram lots in even around work. Here you can do most anything any time you want - especially with the all night buses running right to the end of my street and it's entirely acceptable to head out to a pub at 9pm on a Sunday night (like yesterday…) being close to everything and having great public transport means that Im able to do a lot of things despite working 40 hours. The job is going really well, we're still waiting for the final figures to come back from the CEO so I can organise all the bonus payouts for this 6 month period but until then Im helping the global mobility manager and the HR Administrators around the office, enjoying the free lunches (there's so much to choose from - soups, sandwiches, baked potatoes, japanese and even pizza and KFC on fridays) and eating lots of fruit - its such a cool service to provide for employees - and as a temp Im completely living it up!! In my two weeks here so far one person has left to get married and another had a birthday so there's always lots of cake around for afternoon tea!

My flat is going really well too, Im stoked I moved in there, everyone is lovely and we've spent a lot of nights just hanging out at home chatting, with often ends up in us walking down to Fulham Broadway and invariably ended up out dancing together. Ive adapted to sharing a room with three other girls really quickly, despite having slightly different schedules we never wake each other up, although with winter looming its getting harder and harder to get up in the mornings and go for a run so I may have to find a cheap gym or pool soon. So what fun stuff has been going on in London for me over my first month here… actually quite a bit of drinking, surprisingly enough! They'res another similarity to Japan - because houses are smaller people always head out to socialise and meet up for a drink which (if you go to the right place on the right day or you get the guys to pay :P) isnt actually all that expensive. Have met a lot of people out and about - Kiwis, Aussies, South Africans, Brazilians, Polish Spanish, French, Irish, Scottish, Albanian, the list goes on… When people meet you here the first question isn't "What’s your name?" its "Where do you come from?" it’s a pretty multicultural city and Im enjoying it to the fullest. Other than heading out clubbing a lot of nights Ive been doing some actual dancing and am getting into Ceroc classes (thanks for getting me hooked Pete and Mikey) it’s a mix between modern jive and salsa and as a girl all I have to do is smile and spin but it looks awesome, and Im working on the concept of not being in control all the time. They'res a beautiful dance hall about 15 mins down the road from me and for £6 it’s a great way to spend 3 hours on a Thursday night!

I worked at the Opportunities NZ Expo last weekend and seeing as I'm working 12 days straight I'm taking it a little bit easier on the extra-curricular activities this week. The two days at the expo was cool though, I was just on the door meeting and greeting people and handing out leaflets but it was a lot of fun to be back in a bubbly customer service role, and they paid me in cash afterwards which definitely helped towards this months rent : ) Just like a career fair there were lots of free goodies so got to indulge in pineapple lumps, peanut slabs and chocolate fish!! Even got a couple of free tee-shirts (a wellington one and an AB one) and a cute little plush teddy-bear! On my breaks I also got a chance to talk to some people about HR positions for when I come back to NZ in 2008 (if I decide to launch into a career back home) and will be working at the Opportunities Australia Expo in two weeks time so will hopefully look to set up some contacts there as well just to keep my options open!

This weekend Im heading off somewhere - don’t ask me where… camping with my Polish flatmate Gosia and her Brazilian friend Priscilla and some scouts, so that should be a really cool experience. Over the last couple of weeks I've had a chance to catch up with my Pat and Reg Hammond who were over taking a well deserved holiday and surprising Pat's brother Chris for his 50th birthday party, I had a great day mingling and eating and really enjoyed playing with the kids outside on the tramp and trying to understand 10 year old Sophie's science homework - obviously to no avail… Got to hang out with my cousin from back home - Paul - and we had drinks at this wicked underground Irish pub in Leicester Square with a huge tree inside and dinner at a Lebanese place in Soho. That reminds me, he's been here for a little while and has done quite a bit of travelling with his partner so I will have to drill him for tips once Ive saved enough up to travel around Western Europe and Thailand etc on the way home. Hoping to be able to get to Poland for Christmas and might have New Years in Berlin with a german friend from Japan which would be wicked but we'll have to wait and see.

Other than that, Ive been to the Festival on the Thames with Jayne, saw the AFL final with a bunch of Aussies at the walkabout in Sheperds Bush, went to a market in East London and found these amazing buddha bags, and Wallies and have just been having a pretty fun time in general. I would love to hear from you guys. Let me know whats going on wherever you are in the world, despite keeping myself busy here Id actually love to hear what you're up to - leave a message here or you have my email, phone number and snail mail address so there's no excuse innit!

London baby yeah!

30 September 2006

Well, this weekend marks my two week anniversary of being in London, and what a crazy two weeks its been. Ive been really busy running around London to interviews but in the end everything has worked out swimmingly. Actually Im so ecstatic that I dont even know if that's a real word! and I apologise if this blog gets a bit wordy as Im excited and very likely to get carried away with how perfectly everything has worked out. I've got a new place to live, new job, new bank account and a new phone but Im still the same old Melissa you know and love, enjoying getting thrown in the deep end overseas, and still missing the company of her awesome mates in the evenings and weekends - big hug :)

So details...

New Place - A room was available at Jayne's place that I've dossing at for the first couple of weeks. Its a nice area called Fulham in SW London, close to the tube and supermarket and I get along really well with her flatties so am excited about unpacking my bag and moving in this weekend. Its £66 a week for a single bed in a shared room (mines right next to the window, upstairs in the pink house - im sharing with two other chicks, one from Poland and one from Spain) in a fully furnished flat with 6 of us in all (its balanced with two Aussies and two Kiwis)

New job - After attending heaps of interviews and having to put together pros and cons lists for the positions I was offered, I start my new job on Monday. Im working as a temp for Man Investments (http://www.mangroupplc.com/) and will be their Compensation and Benefits Administrative Assistant (working on sending out letters about payment of a bonus to 1400 of their 4000 employees in 14 countries) for the next month. Its a basic Admin role but pays £11 an hr (double the minimum wage) its a nice office right on the River Thames and by the Tower of London and there are free lunches in the cafe or other restaurants nearby, I will be there until the 25th of October. On the 26th of October I start a 6 month maternity cover contract as the HR/Training Administrator at a Centaur Media (http://www.centaur.co.uk/). Its a close-knit HR team of 5 and I'll be providing administrative support to the whole HR function so it will be great to get an experience of all of generalist HR and will keep me going right through the winter in London until the end of April.
So things couldnt have worked out better if Id planned them - that seems to be a common theme for this trip - and a bit of a scary revelation. It has been actually kind of fun juggling interviews and phonecalls and company research for the past couple of weeks, I feel like Im always on the computer or phone sending out CVs or confirming times etc but it has allowed to get out and about in London a bit - albiet inbetween interviews in a suit. Its great to have everything sorted in under two weeks and I think Im really lucky. Its exciting to know Im settling down in London for the next 7 months and then I think Im gonna try and find work somewhere else in the UK for the remainder of my time here. So keep checking out this blog for updates of how life in London for one crazy kiwi is going. Luv and cake xx

From the Big Apple to Big Ben

21 September 2006

A big hi to everyone from England - well Ive finally arrived here for the working part of my big OE, and have been greeted with fairly nice weather, cute little streets with identical looking houses and extortionate prices - exactly what I expected (well apart from the nice weather - but Im sure that'll only be for another couple of weeks or so). Was met at the airport by an old next-door neighbour and family friend, Jayne, and am lucky enough to be able to doss on her lounge floor for a couple of weeks until I find a place of my own. After spending two days inside, online applying for jobs I finally got out of the house and got myself a simcard to go in the cellphone Im borrowing from Alastair - cheers mate! - and got out to Guildford to meet up with some of Claire's family - Uncle Ian, Jo and cute baby (well if you can call 22months a baby - but shes still a cutie!) Clara.

In the next couple of days Im hoping to do boring stuff (but pivotal to my life here now) like get to the bank and get my account sorted, get a tax number, and meet with a couple of recruitment agencies to be put on their endless list of Australasians looking for work in the UK - but Im special so Im sure I'll find something soon - will keep you updated :) All my love from the other side of the world - Liss, Mel, Lissa, Melly, Risa (however you know me) - love from me xx
